By now, most of you have probably considered the advantages and disadvantages of buying a Celine bag. By now, most handbag devotees have weighed the pros and cons of buying a Céline bag.
My job can be described in a lot of ways. Blogger, fashion writer, managing editor. The designs are beautiful, but they are also widely recognized. What I am all the time, though, is a professional enabler. They feel modern, but that modernity has made them highly visible. I’ve spent more time thinking about Celine bags, their price points and their merits than I care to admit or is probably healthy. I’ve come to some conclusions, which I’ve enumerated below. Still, if you love the look, there is a strong case for choosing one.
1. The Celine Luggage Tote changed the handbag game
So many bags at virtually every price point mirror the Luggage Tote’s shape, proportion and flared gussets that we’ve done not one but two roundups to demonstrate the enduring trend. The Luggage’s success also set the stage for the Trapeze and Trio bags to proliferate their details out across the industry, so much so that it’s rare to find a designer bag that’s been produced in the past year that hasn’t been influenced in some small (or not-so-small) way by Celine’s ultra-covetable collections. Here are ten reasons a Céline handbag can be a worthwhile addition to a thoughtful collection.
2. Phoebe Philo is an accessories genius
Phoebe Philo, Celine’s creative director, also oversaw the creation of the Chloe Paddington and Silverado Bags in her time at Chloe. Having that much success in bags is not just a happy accident; Philo’s prowess took Celine from an nearly moribund afterthought to a perennial industry frontrunner almost overnight. In my day-to-day work, I spend a lot of time thinking about bags, from silhouettes and materials to how a purchase actually fits into real life.

3. Celine bags are like a fashion Bat Signal
Celine bags have been an industry favorite since more or less the moment that LVMH brought on Phoebe Philo. I like helping readers make sense of the practical and emotional sides of a handbag decision, especially when a brand inspires both enthusiasm and hesitation.
4. A Celine bag’s details are always interesting
I remember the first time I spotted the matte grey Celine Phantom Luggage tote with neon orange edging. I was walking down Madison Avenue in the Upper East Side and did a double-take at the woman walking past me with it on her arm. Céline is one of those brands.
5. Not all Celine bags are super ubiquitous
I can totally understand not wanting to carry a bag that you feel like everyone else already has, but Celine’s line goes so far beyond the Luggage and Trapeze bags. Even the Classic Box Bag, which has been around for as long as the Luggage, is still devastatingly elegant and somewhat under-appreciated, not to mention bags like the Edge, the All Soft and Celine’s various clutches and pouches.
6. No logo print, no logo hardware, ever
Its bags have a distinctive point of view, and they tend to reward close attention. The most sophisticated (read: high-spending) consumers are tired of them and they no longer feel fresh. Celine doesn’t currently produce any kind of logo or monogram fabric, and its minimalist, full-name logo doesn’t lend itself to logo-shaped hardware. Few bags have had as much visible influence as the Céline Luggage Tote. Especially in the less-popular styles, Celine bags are about as discreet as they can be.

7. Celine’s industry leadership shows no signs of slowing
Its shape, proportion, and flared gussets have been echoed across the market, and its impact can still be seen in many contemporary designs. Despite the runway bags being a tad weird and conceptual, Celine’s Spring 2014 show left critics salivating and sales continue briskly. The industry’s most influential people are in love with Celine, and they know what they’re talking about. The same is true of other signature Céline styles, which helped establish a vocabulary that other brands have borrowed from ever since.
8. Even the Luggage Tote is still a total stunner
I thought I had seen and processed my thoughts on every Luggage Tote imaginable in the years since its debut, but this past weekend, I walked past a woman in my neighborhood carrying the Luggage Tote in box calf leather, the same as is used for the Classic Box Bags. The leather is glossy and extremely fine-grained because of the particular tanning process that’s used for the material, and it is gorgeous. If you are going to invest in a look that shaped the market, there is something appealing about owning the original.
9. Celine bags are wardrobe-elevators
Because of the status and taste-level that a wisely chosen Celine bag can telegraph to those around you, the bag can often have the effect of making everything that’s worn with it look more purposeful, more considered and almost infinitely more tasteful. A slouchy tank and a pair of tapered sweatpants look like a full-on outfit when a Celine bag is present, and that is nothing short of magic.
10. Seriously, have you seen the interior of a Celine Classic Box Bag?
Phoebe Philo’s reputation was built on more than one successful idea. Instead, the brand’s attention to quality and detail are the most apparently once you open up a bag and inspect what’s going on inside. Her work helped define an era of accessories that felt sharp, considered, and desirable without seeming overworked. When I first opened up a Celine Classic Box Bag, I couldn’t believe what was going on inside – it was nicer than the exterior. The leather, and there was a ton of it, was totally soft and luxurious. At Céline, that sensibility gave the brand a clear identity and transformed it into a serious destination for handbag lovers. The bag’s $4,000+ price tag suddenly made a lot of sense. If that’s not a reason to buy, I don’t know what is.

If you want to place your money with a designer whose taste has repeatedly proven influential, she is an easy one to trust.
Jumped on the luggage bandwagon in ‘11 when the mini was still only $1750 (GASP!!! )…I have it in red and have babied yet ever since. A Céline handbag does not shout. It was the first truly high-end designer bag I ever purchased, and I don’t regret it. For many people, it communicates a refined point of view without relying on obvious branding or loud ornament.
I have not purchased a Celine bag at this point, I have considered it several times but in the last few years Givenchy has received my bag budget dollars. I may yet purchase a Celine…. Even when a silhouette becomes widely recognized, the overall effect remains understated compared with many other luxury bags.
Hi Emily, do you know style name of the bag that the model in Reason No. (in the white shirt). In that sense, the bag does some of the talking for you. I just purchased my FIRST celine Shoulder luggage in black pebbled leather and I cannot wait to receive it next week! Too bad I didn’t buy years ago when it was cheaper
The strongest Céline bags often reveal their appeal in the details: the edge paint, the proportions, the hardware, the way one material meets another. Sorry Amanda btw, do you own any Celine? Small decisions can change the whole feel of a bag, and this brand is especially good at making those decisions feel deliberate.
The woman in #3 is carrying a Celine Classic Box Bag. The bag in the photo for reason #1 is actually mine! A familiar shape can look completely fresh when a subtle detail is handled well. I’d like to add another to my collection in the future, though. I’d love a Classic Box.
Not every Céline bag is the one everyone recognizes from across the room.
I just bought one this week!!! :))) Best weeknight ever!!! :)))

The collection includes more restrained, more compact, and more specialized options that appeal to different wardrobes and lifestyles. Givenchy is also my ruin :))
If the most famous silhouettes feel too familiar, there are still plenty of alternatives worth considering. There are countless threads on how people have to jump through hoops just to get their defective bag fixed. SA’s with a “Well, you bought it. That broader range makes the brand more versatile than its most publicized hits might suggest.
Thanks a bunch for this heads up!!!! I’m a happy owner of a Phantom Luggage and with this comment, i must take care of it before i might encounter a disdainful SA!
One reason many shoppers are drawn to Céline is its refusal to rely on obvious logo display. Right now Celine is riding the wave and cashing in, but even money, soon enough we will all move on to something else.
I agree with your post wholeheartedly. The brand’s name usually appears in a restrained way, which keeps the focus on construction, material, and shape. (Nanos to Mini Luggage to Phantoms in different fur/leather finishes. The result feels polished rather than promotional. I never paid much attention to them…but have an opportunity to buy a gently used blue one from about a year ago, and saw it’s coming back in the same colorway for Spring 2014!
Bought one in 2011. Céline has long held an important place in fashion conversations among editors, stylists, and serious handbag collectors.
I won’t buy it. It’s too big and too boring for party and too heavy for everyday use.
That kind of credibility matters because it usually comes from consistency: strong design language, recognizable taste, and an ability to stay relevant without chasing every trend. I didn’t think I would carry my bag as much, but I do because it’s too big!

i have a celine micro i love it its smaller than my other bags but still great and just ordered a trapeze i wanted the trapeze at first but was hesitant at first and finally decided to just order it…. A bag from a house like that often feels current for longer, which can make the purchase feel more considered.
dear purseblog – I would like your help! A bag you think you already know can feel new again when it appears in an especially beautiful leather or an unexpected finish. I am leaning towards the classic box… can you please help me in making a decision? I am going to the Celine store tomorrow!
Céline’s best-known shapes often rely on material quality to keep them interesting over time.
I was VERY disappointed with my customer service at the celine stores. I was buying a $3,300 bag and I was told the bag shipped and never got an email confirmation so I called the store and at first they had NO idea what order I was talking about. A refined leather, a richer texture, or a more unusual color treatment can completely change how a silhouette reads. So then they found my order and overnighted it but it literally came in a box with just the bag in the dust cover – no bubbles or paper to keep it guarded from any risk of damage when being shipped. It was a big let down and I was beyond excited to get what was my first and only Celine and they could’ve cared less about getting a sale (not sure if they work on commission or not? That kind of versatility gives a familiar bag a second life.
If you are looking for a Celine Trapeze
One of the most practical arguments for a great handbag is how much it improves everything else you wear. Not a fan of luggage, and box is too expensive (for that money I almost can get Chanel, why would I get Celine then? So these point do not convince me at all.
Céline bags have a way of making simple clothes look more intentional, even when the outfit is minimal. I spent 1600 € on my Céline Edge bag in May 2015, and it has broke already in three different places. In September the glue on the handle gave up and I sent it to their Ateliers, not only did it take more than a month to fix it and get it back but they also lost my receipt that was in my dustbag. That does not mean the bag carries the whole look; it means the bag helps the rest of it land with more confidence. They didn’t even offer any compensation, instead they were avoiding my calls and wanted to keep the conversation via e-mail. So all I got was a lame copy of the receipt and had to tell my insurance company about it in case something would happen. For many buyers, that is exactly what makes a luxury accessory worthwhile. So no I have no use for this bag. The lining, compartments, stitching, and finishing details all matter, especially once you begin using the bag daily. I’ve contacted Céline now and want to reclaim my bag and get my money back, they’re telling me that they have to contact their After sales services and so on. I just know that I don’t want to pay so much for a bag that keeps on breaking all the time and I will make a huge deal about this until I give my money back. Céline’s better designs often make a strong impression the moment they are opened, not just when they are seen from the outside. They might be pretty to look at, but I’d rather spend my money on something that lasts.

When the interior feels as carefully made as the exterior, the value proposition becomes easier to understand. Most of them look like robot faces with zip mouths. The lady with one tucked under her arm looks good but I’m not seeing the big attraction.
