Luxury handbag enthusiasts hoping to purchase a new Chanel bag from the comfort of home will need to adjust their expectations. Chanel has confirmed that it does not plan to sell its handbags, or its ready-to-wear collections, through e-commerce in the near future.

Why Chanel Is Holding Back on Digital Retail

Speaking at a Vogue conference in Paris, Pavlovsky explained the brand’s reasoning. According to Bruno Pavlovsky, the maison’s president of fashion, opening every collection to everyone at once can dilute the sense of rarity that defines the brand. While he left the door slightly ajar for future possibilities, he emphasized that any move into e-commerce would only happen if it brought genuine added value to the customer experience.

The brand has left open the possibility of future experimentation, but only if an online channel can improve the customer experience in a meaningful way. That timeline came and went without implementation, and now the brand has officially backtracked.

A Different Path from Competitors Like Céline

Chanel’s decision stands in stark contrast to rivals such as Céline, which recently launched its Spring 2018 collection with full e-commerce in France and has promised U. In 2015, Chanel indicated that it would test online sales for select fashion items, with plans that suggested a possible launch the following year. Chanel, however, remains privately owned, giving it the freedom to prioritize brand control over rapid expansion.

No Signs of Slowing Down

Brands such as Céline have embraced online shopping more fully, including digital access to seasonal collections in certain markets. The brand does not publicly disclose sales figures, but indicators such as strong celebrity endorsements and persistent scarcity of popular models in boutiques suggest consumer interest remains exceptionally high.
