It’s wartime in Europe again. Prada’s Fall/Winter 2009 collection trades flash for discipline, drawing its strength from restraint rather than spectacle. Forget the 80s-inspired neon club excess that we saw on New York’s runways – Prada isn’t going clubbing anytime soon. On Miuccia Prada’s Milan runway, the mood felt severe in the best possible way: tailored, controlled, and deliberately unsentimental. There are rich tweeds in neutral grey and brown, cinched at the waist with thin brown belts. The shoulders and fall of the skirts are strongly 1940s reminiscent, and even the beaded pieces have an austerity that reminds one of a world torn apart by war in Western Europe.

Instead of the bright, club-ready color stories that defined many other shows of the season, Prada leaned into muted neutrals, dark tones, and a more historically inflected silhouette. These are the things that make me think of 1940s movies instead of 1940s reality when I view this collection – no one in war-torn mid-century Europe was traipsing around in sequined tweed suits with adorable peplums, but the iconic actresses of the generation certainly did in the movies that now define the era; Lauren Bacall and Barbara Stanwyck come to mind. Rich tweeds, cinched waists, sharp shoulders, and fuller skirts suggested wartime austerity translated through a luxury lens. This is 1940s fashion without rationing or bread lines, even in today’s economic climate.

Velvet, fur, leather, and beadwork added depth and texture, giving the clothes a sense of opulence without losing the collection’s disciplined core. Certainly the luxury wardrobe of a world at war requires some shoes that don’t mess around, and the hip-high leather boots with chunky soles could probably get you through whatever mess you were to face. I’m not sure that waders were part of the fashion of the era, but if anyone can convince the fashion public that they were, it’s Miuccia Prada.

The result felt like period inspiration filtered through modern polish, with just enough glamour to keep the severity from becoming severe in a flat or gloomy way.

I love it! This is what I’ve been waiting for from one of my favourite brands. Prada is back!

The footwear pushed the looks into more unexpected territory. Love the cinched waists and full skirts.

these are woman friendly designs, i would love to be able to afford them.

The oversized leather boots, with their heavy soles and practical shape, introduced a tougher, more utilitarian note that contrasted with the refined tailoring. I also wish I could afford it, but I hope it will set a trend. For some viewers, that contrast may have been the collection’s most arresting element; for others, the volume of certain tops and dresses may have felt too loose or obscuring.

I love these, especially the coats, hopefully the style trickles down into some more affordable (for me) brands =D

I don’t like.
