Inside the Hermèsmatic NYC Pop-Up: Exclusive Photos and a Firsthand Dip-Dye Experience
Step inside the Hermèsmatic NYC pop-up, a retro orange laundromat offering complimentary scarf dip-dyeing. Exclusive photos and a firsthand account of the experience.

A Vintage Scarf Gets a New Life at the Hermèsmatic Pop-Up

We arrived with an orange scarf and departed with something entirely transformed.
The Hermèsmatic concept gave guests a rare chance to refresh a pre-owned silk scarf through a dip-dye process, turning a familiar accessory into a one-of-a-kind piece. The idea was simple yet brilliant: guests could bring in a pre-loved silk scarf and have it dip-dyed using custom orange washing machines. The entire space was styled like a retro laundromat, but with an unmistakably Hermès touch. The pop-up was designed to feel both whimsical and polished, with a compact layout dressed in vivid Hermès orange.

Stepping Into the Orange Wonderland
Curiosity got the better of us, so we visited the pop-up to capture exclusive images and test the dip-dye service ourselves. The space was compact but meticulously decorated in signature Hermès orange. Staff were prepared for curious guests stopping in to observe or take photos, but they were also efficient and attentive once assistance was requested.

Staff members were accustomed to guests stopping by purely for photos. No one approached me initially, but when I asked for assistance, I was promptly directed to the right person. In this case, pink felt like the most balanced choice, while other shades could have shifted the result toward less desirable undertones.

Choosing the Perfect Shade

After a quick consultation, the staff and I agreed that pink was the safest choice for an orange scarf. The turnaround time was communicated as a short wait, with staff explaining that retrieval would depend on demand. I visited on a Friday and was told the process would take 24 to 48 hours, depending on demand. I would receive a call when it was ready.
Pickup and the Final Reveal
When the scarf was finally picked up, the difference was immediate. If I couldn’t retrieve my scarf in time, it would be transferred to the Hermès boutique on Madison Avenue. I never received a call over the weekend, but when I visited the Madison Avenue store the following Tuesday, my scarf was waiting. For scarf lovers, that balance of preservation and transformation is exactly what makes the Hermèsmatic concept memorable.
