Nicolas Ghesquière returned to New York on a sweltering Wednesday afternoon earlier this week to unveil Louis Vuitton’s Cruise 2027 collection. Rather than presenting the city as a single mood, the collection drew on the tension between its different districts, codes, and energies, giving the show a distinctly urban and highly curated perspective.

This interplay of contrasts was deepened by Ghesquière’s fascination with the many contradictions within New York itself, from its diverse communities to the contrasts between uptown, downtown, and every neighborhood in between.

The runway took place on the Upper East Side at the Frick Collection. Haring’s work, rooted in the city’s street culture and graphic language, added a pop-art reference point that felt both decorative and conceptually tied to the setting. Haring, a defining figure in pop art, rose to prominence in the 1980s by blending street culture with graphic imagery, emerging from the New York subway scene.

The leather suitcase, acting as a blank canvas, hints at the many nods to New York’s pop culture woven throughout the collection. Classic Louis Vuitton silhouettes such as the Speedy and Alma are refreshed with Haring-inspired motifs, while other designs respond more directly to New York and the venue itself.

When it comes to bags, the collection offers a deeper look at Ghesquière’s next major collaboration. The assortment also includes a customized Speedy with a more personal, lived-in feel, along with playful novelty pieces and expanded versions of the Petite Malle. Other bags reference New York and the show venue, such as an architectural top-handle bag shaped like a column, inspired by the Frick Collection’s interiors.

A customized Speedy—reminiscent of how NYC college students might adorn a bag with patches and pins—appeared alongside a crystallized takeout container and puffed-up versions of the Petite Malle. Overall, the bags in Louis Vuitton Cruise 2027 reflect Ghesquière’s usual blend of craftsmanship, wit, and reference-driven design, while keeping New York’s layered character at the center of the story.
