Carrying that fake gave me such a rush that I knew the authentic version would be worth every dollar I earned. By 2003, logo bags were everywhere, and I was fully aware of the appeal.

To my 18-year-old eyes, it was the most sophisticated thing I had ever seen. I had my own income, and I had patience enough to save for exactly what I wanted.

That bag became my constant companion through college. At the Coach counter, I pointed to the bag inside the glass case: a hobo style with a gray C-logo body, black leather trim, and a top flap secured by a substantial silver buckle. Years later, while working at Best Buy selling appliances and electronics, I decided I needed a tan bag to rotate with my outfits.
