NYFW Day 1 Handbag Strategy: Dressing Around the Hermes Birkin

The Bag-First Philosophy at New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week has a way of turning a simple outfit decision into a full-scale styling puzzle. As I scrambled, a bemused observer asked if all women believe they need more clothes. For me, that piece is always the handbag.

But when Fashion Week isn’t dictating my wardrobe, I’m far less preoccupied with clothing. Rather than building a look from the clothes up, I prefer to start with the bag and let everything else fall neatly into place. I am, after all, the handbag queen.

Curating an Outfit Around the Birkin

At Fashion Week, that approach is especially useful because a strong handbag can set the tone immediately. To make Day 1 feel effortless, I used my usual dress-around-the-bag formula and started with a black Hermes Birkin. From there, I built a clean, understated outfit to let the bag lead.

I paired it with a 388 cashmere top, a red-and-black floral Mink Pink skirt, an Oscar de la Renta coin necklace, and Jeffrey Campbell shoes. The result felt polished without competing with the handbag.

The Shows: Nicholas K, BCBG, and Chadwick Bell

The mix felt refined but not severe, with enough contrast to keep the outfit interesting while allowing the Birkin to remain the focal point. Each venue brought its own energy, but the bag remained the constant, grounding element of my look.

Each show offered its own mood, but the handbag worked as the constant element that tied the look together throughout the day. That is part of the appeal of a great statement bag: it gives even a busy Fashion Week schedule a sense of consistency.
