The Mystery of Foxtail Resurfaces

Jake’s Miraculous Recovery

“Foxtail” comes back into focus here, after first being mentioned in the previous episode during Russell’s conversation with Rowan. Olivia then pushes for answers in a far more direct way, and the episode uses that pressure to drive the season toward its finale. The result is a tense hour built around secrecy, manipulation, and the sense that several characters are already one step behind.

During a Navy photo-op, Vice President Crazypants notices a bruise on a servicewoman’s wrist and assumes she was assaulted. Her goal is to move the case from military tribunal to civilian court, where the odds of a fair hearing appear stronger.

Jake’s Confession and Russell’s Fate

Under the influence of pain meds, Jake reminds Olivia that both he and Russell stalked and studied her in identical ways. The only difference: Jake fell in love. He seems to encourage Olivia to kill Russell—understandable, given Russell stabbed him multiple times.

In a puzzling move, Jake visits Russell over beers to explain that Rowan intended Olivia to catch both of them. Rowan needs Olivia to know she can be controlled, and that only works if she discovers his spies. It’s deeply unsettling that Rowan has trained a small army of men to seduce his daughter, though he does choose attractive ones.

The Final Twist: Virgil and Mellie

Mellie is forced to confront difficult questions on the campaign trail, and her personal history with Fitz makes the stakes even more painful. She asks him to do the right thing, but he refuses, leaving her to absorb another blow from the people closest to power.
