Fast forward to today, and that optional convenience is something many of us take for granted. Yet fashion is cyclical, and a new wave of day bags is emerging that offers no shoulder carry option at all. But fashion cycles rarely stay still for long.

Why Designers Are Removing Shoulder Straps

At first, many expected this to be a short-lived experiment. At first glance, the strap-free direction can seem like a contrarian move. These bags are structured, sculptural, and deliberately impractical in a way that feels intentional.

Who Is Buying Hand-Carry-Only Bags?

Personally, I would never buy one of these bags. Without a strap to soften the silhouette, the bag reads cleaner and more elevated, especially when paired with tailored clothing or minimal daywear. Perhaps it’s the collector who values form over function, or the fashion editor who only carries a bag from car to curb.
