Why Designer Bags Keep Haunting My Browser (And Probably Yours Too)

Internet advertising is an accepted part of modern life, but the algorithm has become unsettlingly good at predicting what we actually desire. Internet advertising is now so finely tuned that it can feel almost personal. Lately, the targeting has sharpened, and it knows exactly which arm candy I covet.

E-commerce platforms use cookies to track our clicks, then pay other sites to display those exact products while we are trying to read about celebrity style. It is intrusive, a little eerie, and, if I am honest, occasionally very effective.

The items I want are rarely the sensible ones I should buy, nor the ones I actually purchase. These are rarely the sensible bags, and they are even less often the ones we end up buying. Some of them are objectively questionable. (See the space rooster below.

What follows is a roundup of the purses that kept showing up in my browser and refused to leave quietly.

Exhibit A: The Metallic Gucci That Won Me Over

Exhibit B: Judith Leiber’s Irresistible Sparkle

I would never purchase a Judith Leiber bag for practical reasons—I have nowhere to wear a crystal-encrusted minaudière. Yet these glittering creations frequently appear in my writing. Some bags need very little explanation. The ads will not convert me this time.

Exhibit C: Fendi Mania Takes Over

This is the sort of piece that works best as a visual interruption: bold enough to stand apart, but still grounded in the house codes that make it feel intentional rather than gimmicky. Like many of the bags that haunt my browser, it took time for the obsession to fully bloom. I cannot get this purse out of my head, and every time I see it, I fall harder.

Exhibit D: Furla Candy Bags and My PVC Weakness

Judith Leiber’s bag designs are pure fantasy objects: decorative, precise, and made for the kind of dressing that treats accessories as the main event. They are not refined in the traditional sense, but I look at them often, and the adware reminds me of my embarrassing fondness for PVC handbags. I already own a tiny lime yellow Candy bag with silver sequins. Some obsessions arrive slowly, which is exactly why they are so persistent. This is a bag my eight-year-old self would have adored. Fendi Mania has that effect: energetic, graphic, and memorable enough to keep resurfacing in your mind long after you have tried to move on.

Exhibit E: Off-White’s Tempting Streetwear Edge

I have wanted an Off-White purse for a long time, but deep down I know these styles may not age gracefully. I continue to resist, though it grows harder each day when I am haunted by variations of the bags I want in different silhouettes.

Exhibit F: The Dolce & Gabbana Space Rooster

They are playful, shiny, and not especially concerned with being understated, which is precisely the point. For months, I added this Dolce & Gabbana Sicily bag with a space rooster print to my shopping cart, then removed it. Every day I resolved to buy it, then changed my mind. If you already like clear or PVC bags, the Candy family offers a version of that appeal with an extra layer of whimsy. I probably made the right decision, but I still wonder what life would be like with a space rooster by my side. Off-White bags occupy an interesting space between fashion statement and trend risk.

Exhibit G: The Overpriced Bag Strap Obsession

Shoulder straps seem wildly overpriced for what they are, but I went through a phase of browsing them constantly, hoping to revitalize some of my black purses. After realizing I would likely never find an Off-White shoulder strap, I descended into a dark eBay rabbit hole searching for cheap Off-White camera straps that might have been counterfeit and could possibly double as shoulder straps. That tension is exactly why they haunt the browser: they are cool enough to consider, but distinctive enough to make you pause before committing. Also, I do not recall giving eBay my email address.

Which Bags Follow You Around the Internet?

Please tell me this happens to other people too. This kind of bag becomes less about need and more about the emotional tug of an idea: a print you cannot stop thinking about, a shape you keep revisiting, a design that feels too playful to ignore and too specific to forget.

It only happens because I click on the links you have on PurseBlog and then every day I see purse ads. Sometimes you decide it was never meant to be.

It’s true about targeted ads for bags (which I do like) but the internet also seems to think I like hot Asian chicks (which I do not like). When all is said and done, I think artificial intelligence has a long way to go.

Straps are one of those accessories that sound simple until you actually start shopping for them.
